Can You Lose Weight Without Falling Vitctim to Diet Culture?

Keto. Intermittent Fasting. Paleo. Juice Fasts. They all claim to be the best for weight loss, but is this true? There is an overwhelming amount of information out there trying to convince you to lose weight. While there are a myriad of ways to lose weight, losing weight too quickly or in super restrictive ways won’t work in the long term. In this episode, Illa and TMN Coach Courtney discuss a number of things that the dieting industry gets wrong about long term weight loss. They also discuss a recent Variety article about disordered eating tied to Gwen Shamblin Lara of the Weigh Down Workshop, where Shamblin Lara equated weight gain with sin in her christian based Remnant Fellowship.

3 ways the diet industry gets weight loss incorrect include:

  • Claiming there is one way to lose weight. When people preach that there is just one way, they are often trying to sell you something. Different methods work for different people, the key is finding a way that will work for you in the long term.

  • Losing a large amount of weight quickly may seem like a win but it's actually a loss. When you severely restrict your calories, you lose weight quickly but your body becomes malnourished. This puts your body at a higher risk of developing diseases since you don’t have the nutrition to protect yourself.

  • Don’t take things to the extreme. More is not always the answer. A little protein is good, but don’t go overboard and eat a ton of protein. Walking 10,000 steps a day is good, but don’t go overboard and do 30,000 steps. Incorporate habits that are sustainable in the long term.
